The Strategies of CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility)
Four things that must be considered in formulating a strategy of CSR activities. First is focus, meaning that the company must choose one or several themes that become the focus of its CSR activity. For example the theme of education, environment, health, or social disparity. Without a theme that becomes the focus, it will blur the goal of the activity that could impede the expected impact.
Second, CSR activities should be done consistently. If the company conducts its CSR activity consistently in the long term, it is likely will earn the trust of stakeholders and will draw them to participate. Third, relate the activity with the company’s brand. The purpose is to form a good brand identity through its CSR activity. For example, Cosmo Sekiyu, a Japanese oil companies, involve in CSR for the rehabilitation of tropical forest which has close relationship with their product or brand.
Fourth is to brand its CSR activity. For example by giving a name, make a logo or slogan on its CSR activity. Thus the company is expected to be easier to communicate the CSR activity to its stakeholders. In preparing the CSR program, there are several things that must be considered to maximize the effect of this activity.
One of them is to involve the consumers to participate in this activity. This can be done by setting aside some of the company’s sales for social activities. For example, Volvic, a producer of mineral water from France, set aside some of its sales for building water wells in Africa.
